Transitioning to zero emissions transit is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and fostering healthier, more livable cities. By embracing innovative technologies and equitable solutions, we can not only combat climate change but also drive economic growth, create green jobs and ensure that the benefits of clean transportation reach every corner of society, including historically underserved communities.

A recent survey distributed to Indspire's 20,000 member directory, alongside phone interviews with 35 Ontario First Nations centers, explored community awareness and readiness regarding zero emissions public transit, such as Battery Electric Buses (BEBs). The findings reveal a significant opportunity: an overwhelming majority of respondents (85%) consider clean transportation and electrification important for their communities, reflecting an emerging interest in sustainable and equitable transit solutions.
However, there is a distinct communication gap; community members report feeling disconnected from new transit developments. About half of the respondents feel they do not have sufficient information about available transit services.
To bridge this knowledge gap and ensure underserved Indigenous populations are not left behind in the transition to clean mobility, the survey underscores the need for centralized, accessible resources. Since the majority of respondents rely on web-based sources for transit updates, 80% of participants expressed strong interest in an online platform, to access updates, learning tools and route considerations. Ultimately, electrifying transit in Indigenous communities goes beyond a simple infrastructure upgrade; it is a vital step toward self-determined climate futures, energy sovereignty, and reconciliation.
