CUTRIC’s Rail Innovation Strategy
Overview
The Rail Innovation Strategy promotes knowledge-sharing and stakeholder engagement across Canada’s rail sector to develop and deploy zero-emissions, smart, and cybersecure rail technology. CUTRIC, through the Rail Technology Innovation Committee, provides a national forum for members to share information and collaborate on innovative rail projects, procurements, and policy, furthering the goals of the Strategy. The Committee also acts as a Rail Innovation Hub to plan and implement collaborative projects based on industry recommendations, shaping the future of rail in Canada through member engagement.

CUTRIC's Rail Innovation Strategy
Overview
CUTRIC's Rail Innovation Strategy promotes knowledge-sharing and stakeholder engagement across Canada's rail sector to develop and deploy cybersecure, zero emissions and smart rail technology. Through the Rail Innovation and Cybersecurity Committee, CUTRIC provides a national forum for members to share information and collaborate on innovative rail projects, procurements and policy. The Committee also acts as a Rail Innovation Hub to plan and implement collaborative projects based on industry recommendations.
Cybersecurity is the Strategy's leading priority for 2026 and 2027, advanced through the Canadian Cybersecurity Innovation Initiative in Rail and Transit and the Committee's work programme. Rail decarbonization and electrification remain within the Strategy's full scope of work.

Strengthening Rail and Transit Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is the leading edge of CUTRIC's Rail Innovation Strategy. CUTRIC is advocating for a $50 million national initiative to establish regulatory guidelines, fund research and development, and create standardized training programs that protect Canada's rail and transit sector from cyber threats.
This work is delivered through the Canadian Cybersecurity Innovation Initiative in Rail and Transit (CCIIRT) and the Rail Innovation and Cybersecurity Committee.
Decarbonizing Rail
Supporting the transition to zero emissions rail by deploying CUTRIC's advanced feasibility and modelling tool, with a focus on hydrogen fuel demand and infrastructure planning.
Driving Innovation
Championing investment in rail innovation, similar to the Zero Emission Transit Fund, to help position Canada as a global leader in sustainable rail and transit technologies.
CUTRIC's Canadian Cybersecurity Innovation Initiative In Rail and Transit (CCIIRT)
Overview
The Canadian Cybersecurity Innovation Initiative in Rail and Transit (CCIIRT) aims to address growing cybersecurity threats in public mobility systems by focusing on regulatory, technological, research and workforce development priorities. With a proposed budget of $50 million over four years, CCIIRT will ensure a secure and resilient public transit infrastructure, enabling safe and efficient transportation while strengthening Canada's leadership in cybersecurity and public safety.

RoutE.iRail™ is CUTRIC's data-driven, empirically validated tool for modelling the energy transition for electrified trains, including both battery-electric and hydrogen-propelled rail systems.
- Technical and Strategic Planning: Quantify technical requirements and plan for transitioning from fossil fuel-powered rail systems to zero emissions propulsion, including strategic implementation and asset rollout over 20 or more years.
- Comprehensive Business Case: Develop the economic, environmental, technological and social business case for transitioning the rail industry to zero emissions technologies.
- Energy Utilization and Fleet Electrification: Predict energy and fuel usage on rail routes, classify routes based on electrification difficulty, and recommend phased fleet electrification aligned with replacement cycles.

CUTRIC held seven consultation sessions for the Smart Rail Innovation Program from 2022 to 2024, which included participants representing the transit and rail industry, government organizations, academia, consulting services and not-for-profit organizations.
