The Low Carbon Smart Mobility Conference
This year’s Low Carbon Smart Mobility and Smart Rail Conference will be held at the Scarborough Convention Centre from November 28-30. The event will gather the brightest domestic and international minds to present, discuss, and collaborate on a variety of topics relating to smart mobility and zero-emission transit. The goal is to equip attendees with the knowledge they need to advocate for the future of transit.
The conference will platform experts in zero-emission bus (ZEB) deployment, autonomous shuttle deployments, hydrogen fuel cell electric buses, and feasibility analysis and transit cyber security.
The Smart Rail Technology Conference
Similarly to the Low Carbon Smart Mobility Conference, the Smart Rail Technology Conference is an opportunity for industry leaders, political representatives, and policy-makers to address critical topics relating to the future of Canadian rail. The guest speakers and their panels will be covering topics such as rail electrification, autonomy, and connectivity – providing attendees of the Smart Rail Technology Conference with a unique and comprehensive learning opportunity. What Can You Expect at the Conference?
Decarbonization of Transit Fleets
With the announcement of the Zero Emission Transit Fund last year, there has been an overwhelming interest in transit fleet electrification planning and deployments. But where does a transit start? Our conference will host a special panel, presented by the Toronto Transit Commission on how they are making fleet electrification work in Canada’s largest, most complex transit system.
With having successfully deployed 60 electric buses and the procurement of an additional 300+, they have a lot of experience that they can share with our audience. The panel will discuss all aspects that need to be considered when decarbonization your public transit fleet including procurement, insurance, legal, operations, finances, and cybersecurity. CUTRIC will also be showcasing Canada’s first nationwide Zero Emission Bus Database which provides an overview of how many zero-emission buses are being planned, pronounced, funded, and deployed over the next 5 years.
The Future of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technologies
Canada is one of the world’s largest hydrogen producers. Hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) technologies are scaling at an unprecedented rate and are currently navigating their way onto Canadian roads. While no HFC-powered fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) are deployed at this time, a CUTRIC-led project is aiming to deploy and demonstrate the feasibility of FCEBs in a Pan-Canadian Demonstration & Integration Trial.
This trial will deploy 10 FCEBs in Mississauga. A number of green hydrogen production facilities are also being planned over the next few years including Ottawa, Manitoba, and Edmonton. But is the green hydrogen fuel supply sustainable and scalable? Needless to say, the future of HFCs in Canada and around the world is bright. Utilities: Key to Mass-Adoption
It’s no secret that ZEBs, BEBs, and similar future-friendly transit vehicles require a massive utility infrastructure to keep up with charging and maintenance demands.
Canadian utility providers, such as BC Hydro, have filed proposals that demonstrate how existing utility infrastructure can temporarily manage the high-volume demand that would emerge as a consequence of electrified transit deployment.
Shifting EV charge times to overnight and off-peak hours, integrating renewable energy, and further investment are a few of the many proposed solutions to the challenges presented by utility infrastructure. The intention of rail electrification is to assimilate energy management systems, energy storage systems, and the grid at an advanced level to bolster the rail sector specifically.
