DR. JOSIPA PETRUNIC, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE CANADIAN URBAN TRANSIT RESEARCH & INNOVATION CONSORTIUM (CUTRIC), RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT RELATED TO THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA’S FALL ECONOMIC STATEMENT

CUTRIC, the non-profit responsible for the development and commercialization of low-carbon transit technologies, is encouraged by the federal government’s Fall Economic Statement that ensures Canadians have the support they need now while committing to additional investments to build back a stronger, more inclusive and sustainable economy through public transit innovation.

CUTRIC applauds the recognition of the essential role of public transit to our communities, as highlighted through the pandemic. Buses, trains, streetcars and shuttles moved our most essential workers to the front-lines even amidst the most restrictive government lock-downs. The government’s commitment to electrify public transit systems across Canada, matched by permanent public transit funding, illustrates the federal government’s understanding that Canada is at a crossroads and that only through deliberate and strategic investments in low-carbon transit technologies can we build the country we have always aspired to. Low-carbon transit projects, with many completed already through partnership with the government, support Canadians in cities while creating jobs and economic prosperity, connecting communities and improving the environment through reducing emissions.

Today’s announcement follows intense advocacy from CUTRIC in advance of the Speech from The Throne, including a tangible, clear Five-Point Plan to Build Back Better Public Transit and an open letter calling on the federal government to accelerate its campaign commitments and commit an additional $3 billion more per year as part of a stable, predictable funding stream for public transit infrastructure.

Today’s Fall Economic Statement is an important step forward, but there is a long road ahead. We look forward to building on our projects across Canada, including with the next generation of advanced technology like those that use hydrogen, as they are imperative to Canada reaching its net-zero targets by 2020. This is our opportunity to transform our economy to one that serves all Canadians including through jobs as we chart our recovery – let’s get to work.”
