DR. JOSIPA PETRUNIC, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE CANADIAN URBAN TRANSIT RESEARCH & INNOVATION CONSORTIUM (CUTRIC), RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S SPEECH FROM THE THRONE

As a consortium dedicated to advancing smart mobility and transportation solutions required for a low-carbon economy, CUTRIC welcomes today’s Speech from the Throne, which outlined the Trudeau government’s priorities for their new mandate. CUTRIC is pleased to see the Throne Speech acknowledge the importance of clean transit as part of Canada’s climate plan and path to 100 per cent net-zero. We welcome the federal government’s intent to grow a more resilient economy and a cleaner healthier future for everyone, with transit at the heart.

CUTRIC also applauds the federal government’s dedication to fighting against COVID-19 and its commitment to building back better from the pandemic to create a cleaner, more inclusive, and prosperous economy.

We were proud to work with the federal government in the last mandate to achieve historic investments in clean transit, as outlined in CUTRIC’s Five-Point Plan to Build Back Better Public Transit. We support the government’s announcements of a $3B permanent transit fund, a $2.75B Zero-Emission Transit Fund, and a $1.5B investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s Growth Plan in 2020-2021.

We urge the government to continue to build on past progress and make further commitments to advancing to zero emissions transit to uplift economies, communities, and the environment. Clean transit projects reduce congestion and pollution in our cities, drive down emissions, spur innovation in clean technology, and create jobs and economic growth. CUTRIC and its members look forward to working with the federal government to continue to strengthen Canada’s position as a leader in clean transit innovation.
