Reciprocal Memorandum of Understanding with e-mobil BW GmbH will see organizations share information, knowledge and best practices in the field of low-carbon mobility and transit solutions
February 10, 2021, TORONTO, ON – The Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with e-mobil BW GmbH, the State Agency for New Mobility and Automotive Solutions in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The MOU establishes a reciprocal arrangement between the two organizations that will support ongoing engagement between the transit, transportation and automotive manufacturing sectors of Canada and Baden-Württemberg. It will also support both organizations’ growth through the sharing of information, knowledge and best practices in the field of low-carbon mobility and zero-emissions heavy-duty transit solutions. This will be achieved in three key ways:
- By building a strategic partnership through collaborative projects, bilateral and multilateral meetings and workshops, R&D, and networking cooperation between members and partners allied to low-carbon and zero-emission transportation, transit and mobility technologies.
- By sharing information on upcoming events, scientific articles, and new facilities allied to low-carbon and zero-emission transportation, transit and mobility technologies.
- By mutually attending conferences and events such as CUTRIC’s Zero Emission Bus Technology & Transit Operations Conference, Automotive Suppliers’ Day Baden-Württemberg, webinars, in-person presentations, member meetings, AGMs and more.
“This agreement strengthens organizations that understand the complexities of decarbonisation in a highly competitive global market,” said Josipa Petrunic, CUTRIC President and CEO. “By connecting CUTRIC and its members with global players on the European stage, we have a tremendous opportunity to advance battery-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell electric and autonomous transit technologies on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Home to extensive expertise in key technologies that are central to the transformation of the automotive industry, Canada has been one of Baden-Württemberg’s most important partner countries since 1987, when the German state first signed an MOU with the Province of Ontario. “Canada’s strong scientific landscape, combined with an innovative automotive cluster focused on fuel cells and the use of renewable energies, forms an ideal basis for enhancing and accelerating joint activities with CUTRIC that began in 2018,” said e-mobil BW Managing Director Franz Loogen.
The virtual MOU signing was attended by dignitaries including Victor Fedeli, Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation & Trade; Donna Skelly, Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation & Trade; Katrin Schütz, State Secretary of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing Baden-Württemberg; and Stéphane Dion, Ambassador of Canada to Germany.
“Congratulations to CUTRIC and e-mobil BW on this important MOU,” said Minister Fedeli, adding that the focus of the partnership is on small to medium-sized companies. “We want to see even more innovation in mobility, which this will certainly help facilitate. We have much to learn from each other, and many opportunities to grow together for years to come.”
Ambassador Dion lauded the agreement as “a striking example of Canada-Germany collaboration in general, and Ontario- Baden-Württemberg in particular, working together to develop climate-friendly transit and infrastructure. As we enter the 50th year of the Canada-Germany S+T agreement, we continue to deepen our cooperation for a sustainable world.”
Added Minister Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing Baden-Württemberg: “By deepening our relationship with CUTRIC, we are laying the foundation for advancing cross-border projects in the field of climate-friendly mobility. Both sides will benefit significantly from this cooperation.”
