In 2024, CUTRIC gathered industry professionals and transit agencies for a focus group discussion regarding the upcoming TransitXcell: A to ZEB platform. This project represents a significant step forward in building public confidence and knowledge regarding zero-emission transit.

Here is an inside look at what CUTRIC discussed and the valuable feedback received from its members as CUTRIC refines the platform for its 2026 launch.

Remind me: What is TransitXcell?

Developed in collaboration with Centennial College and Natural Resources Canada and scheduled for launch in Q1 of 2026, TransitXcell is a comprehensive online resource hub to build knowledge around the benefits and technical realities of transit fleet decarbonization.

The proposed core features of the platform include:

• A repository of federal and provincial funding opportunities
• Practical utilities such as supplier directories
• Visualizing future demand
• Infrastructure and utility mapping

The core feedback: “the bus is the easy part”

This session brought together a targeted group of key stakeholders representing a diverse cross-section of the Canadian transit ecosystem spanning the public sector, private technology providers, and industry associations. This included municipal transit agencies such as the City of Edmonton, TTC, Brampton Transit, and the City of Guelph.

Participants engaged in a 90-minute session broken into three intimate discussion groups to provide detailed feedback ensuring that TransitXcell addresses the needs of everyone from policy makers to technical experts.

The critical need for a “decarbonization roadmap”

Stakeholders emphasize that transit agencies, particularly those just starting out, need a clear workflow or flowchart. They require guidance not just on vehicles, but on the underlying challenges: permits, codes, regulations, and how to structure RFPs.

TransitXcell is being developed to support that essential, step-by-step roadmap.

Serving everyone

To be truly effective, the platform must cater to a wide spectrum of knowledge levels. It was highlighted that the platform needs to be a “one-stop shop” that serves everyone. This means catering to city officials ramping up their knowledge as well as providing the deep-dive technical data for engineers and faculty.

A collaborative path forward

The goal of this focus group was to ensure that TransitXcell isn’t just a static library, but a dynamic tool that solves real-world problems for our users. Based on the direct feedback received during these sessions, we are actively incorporating several key features into the platform’s architecture.

To address the critical need for trust in data, we will implement visible verification timestamps on resources to ensure users can rely on the currency of the information.

Additionally, we are looking to foster stronger community connections in future platform updates by exploring features like job boards and discussion forums, while structuring the platform’s content to serve everyone from students needing “E-bus 101” to experts looking for deep-dive technical data.
