From Vision to Reality: Fuel Cell Systems for Hydrogen Rail with Ballard and CPKC
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has placed an order for Ballard Power Systems' FCwave™ hydrogen fuel cell engines to power their vehicles in Alberta. The integration of two Ballard FCwave™ zero emissions engines into each CPKC unit will provide a total of approximately 20 MW of clean power, supporting the expansion of CPKC’s successful hydrogen locomotive program. This order builds on a partnership that began in 2021, during which Ballard has already delivered 10 MW of fuel cell engines. These engines have been successfully integrated into hydrogen-powered locomotives for switching and freight service applications in Alberta. The new fuel cell engines will help CPKC further reduce emissions and enhance sustainability in its operations, setting a new standard for clean energy in the rail industry. This collaboration highlights the growing role of hydrogen in decarbonizing heavy-duty transport across Canada.
