Dr. Josipa Petrunic, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC), released the following statement related to the Government of Canada’s historic investment in public transit infrastructure:
CUTRIC, the non-profit responsible for the development and commercialization of low-carbon transit technologies, applauds the federal government’s historic public transit infrastructure investments to build a stronger economy and create jobs, a healthier environment and more inclusive communities to the benefit of all Canadians. This is exactly the type of leadership we need right now to build back better through Canada’s comeback from the pandemic, and the kickstart required to accelerate low-carbon transit projects across the country to meet the mobility needs of Canadians.
It is clear the federal government understands the transformational benefits of investing in public transit infrastructure. Transit systems are at the centre of Canada, connecting our communities, creating jobs and economic activity, and fundamental to reducing emissions and meeting Canada’s net-zero carbon emissions commitments by 2050.
CUTRIC is a proud advocate for permanent, stable public transit funding that’s why CUTRIC wrote to the federal government in a recent open letter asking for $3 billion more per year. We are pleased to see the government deliver and our members are eager to build on what has been achieved together and launch more cutting-edge, clean public transit projects that will transform our society for the better.
CUTRIC thanks Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister Catherine McKenna, Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Minister Wilkinson and Canada Infrastructure Bank Chairperson Tamara Vrooman for this monumental investment in public transit infrastructure, and we look forward to working closely together to build low-carbon transit projects to the benefit of millions of Canadians across the country.
CUTRIC is a non-profit innovation consortium with a vision to make Canada a global leader in low-carbon smart mobility. Through industry-led collaborative research and large-scale technology integration trials, CUTRIC is working to achieve this goal by focusing on technology development, integration and standardization of low-carbon propulsion systems and smart vehicle systems, data-driven analytics in mobility, and cybersecurity in transportation.
